Objectives and Course Outline

 

Upon successful completion of this course you will be familiar with or able to perform the following:

Day 1 (2-5pm)

Experience a facilitated climb led by your instructor

Observe how to handle up to 6 climbers at one time (time management)

Observe different ways of instructing others how to climb

Observe how a facilitated tree should be rigged

Help de-rig after a facilitated climb

Discussions

Review prerequisites before entering program

Discuss the Facilitators Packet

Day 2 (9-5pm)

DRT Tree Climb

Climbing test and aerial challenges

How to properly rig a Treeboat for a facilitated climb

Light pruning techniques and handsaw safety protocol

Practice cutting techniques on the ground

Perform removal of deadwood in the canopy

Rescue Discussion

Understand the difference between the 3 rescue scenarios

Ground rescue

Aerial non-critical rescue

Aerial critical rescue

Getting familiar with DRT rescue tools

Pick-off strap

Running carabiner

Rescue knives

First aid kits

Homework for tonight

Day 3 (9-5pm)

DRT Rescue in the Field

Practice all 3 types of rescue

Ground rescue

Non-critical aerial rescue

Critical aerial rescue

Gain experience as the rescuer and the patient

Discussion of Site/Tree/Gear Preparation for Facilitated Climbs

Locating the perfect facilitating tree

Deciduous trees vs. evergreens

Branch structure

Tree inspection for health and integrity

Protecting your tree and caring for it

Selecting location (easy access for vehicles)

Acquiring the appropriate amount of gear to take others into the canopy

Learning a new climbing system to accommodate the needs of all

Instructing others, solving problems and handling stressful situations

Tips on promoting your tree climbing business

15 minute rescue test

Assisting in a speed climb

Working under pressure

How to safely retrieve anyone stuck in the tree during a facilitated climb

Advanced Rescue Scenarios

Advanced problem solving
