FACILITATOR PROGRAM

We believe everyone should have the opportunity to see through the eyes of the trees. As a tree climbing Facilitator you can safely and with confidence provide the tree climbing experience to others.

Facilitating a tree climb calls for a high level of climbing, guiding and rescue expertise. Our former three-day Facilitator Course could only begin to do the job.  Our 2010 FACILITATOR TREE WEEK includes all the material from the earlier course and builds on it to provide a more thorough preparation.

In Facilitator Tree Week you learn how to prepare your climbing site and your trees. You learn how to give a gear talk and orientation when working with first-time climbers. The physical and psychological challenges that your climbers may face are covered in detail. You learn a special climbing system that gives access to tree climbing to some people with disabilities, and to those who are older or overweight. Rescue techniques are covered and practiced every day of class. You learn three different rescue scenarios and how to deal with each one. This portion of the class is physically demanding.

In the past we didn’t have time for hands-on experience in tree maintenance, and students regretted it. Now we can practice transforming a “wild” tree into a “tame” tree—pruned for safe climber access with all hazards removed. We also cover facilitating night climbs.

Finally, you will help facilitate a climb, and you will lead at least one climbing event on your own. You will be required to pass a rescue test, a written exam, and a climbing exam. Be prepared for an awesome week of learning how to confidently share your love of trees with others.

The Facilitator Tree Week training is the first part of the Facilitator Program.  After the training, you’ll enter an internship period, returning to your community to conduct guided climbs and submit reports of your experience to your instructor. When you have demonstrated sufficient experience and proficiency, your instructor will grant a Tree Climbers International (TCI) Facilitator certificate.

If you are with an organization such as a school, camp, or scouting group, we strongly recommend that at least two from your organization participate in the program. Customized Facilitator training for camps or groups of climbers with special needs is available upon request. Please contact Tim Kovar for details.
