| Tree Climbing Northwest NEWS for 2010 from Master Instructor TIM "Tengu" KOVAR Our popular Basic Tree Climbing Course (BTCC) introduces the fundamentals of tree climbing in two and a half days. I have always felt that after a weekend class people were still missing something. They get the tools but do they feel truly confident in their tree climbing ability? Are they comfortable with these tools? They are walking away with new knowledge, but can they use it wisely? There is much more I would like to cover, and there just isn’t time for that in two or three days. In my fifteen years teaching technical tree climbing, I’ve noticed that students receive the greatest benefit from a course that runs five days or more. With such a commitment, the student is immersed in practical tree climbing experience with enough time and space to deeply integrate the lessons learned.
So in 2009 we expanded our shorter classes into week-long courses. The "Tree Week" approach has been a great success with our students. We even had two special courses scheduled back to back, creating a two-week tree climbing intensive. This was good news for participants who wanted thorough immersion in the training experience, and for those coming from distant places who wanted to make the most of their travel investment.
In 2010 our calendar is filled with Tree Week courses to choose from. We have also scheduled a few weekend BTCC courses for those who want a good introduction to DRT tree climbing without investing in a week-long course. In all courses, we will keep class size small (no more than 4:1 student to instructor ratio) so everyone will receive the attention and respect they deserve. We are also determined to keep the cost of our classes as low as we can. Tuition in 2010 is holding steady at 2009 levels, in spite of increases in our costs for transportation, equipment, insurance, and land rental. We are excited to offer you world-class quality tree climbing instruction that will benefit you for the rest of your life. Please join us! |

Basic Tree Climbing Course (BTCC) This course is for those who are just starting out to learn rope-and-harness tree climbing. The focus is on Doubled Rope Technique tree climbing, the style of climbing developed by tree care professionals using friction knots on a supple rope. It is the most versatile climbing technique and is most appropriate for spreading hardwood trees under 80 feet tall. Offered alone or as part of Basic Tree Week. This is a week-long intensive course for beginners that combines BTCC, Rigging and Introduction to Single Rope Technique (SRT), plus plenty of time for practice with instructor available for coaching. Emphasis is on Doubled Rope Technique (DRT). SRT (Single Rope Technique) Tree Week begins with a three-day basic SRT course. Then we expand on it, adding tree top rigging, canopy camping, and tree-to-tree traversing. It is a gear-intensive class, using a lot of hardware such as ascenders, pulleys, grapnels, swivels, and descenders, plus a range of special purpose knots. So if you love slick equipment and want to learn freedom of movement in the tallest tree tops, this is your course. Students may enroll in more advanced TCNW courses only after passing one of these beginning courses or an instructor-approved equivalent. |

ADVANCED COURSES Focusing on single-pitch DRT rescue scenarios, this 3-day workshop prepares climbers to effectively respond when a fellow climber is in distress. For graduates of BTCC or Basic Tree Week. For graduates of any of the above courses, this program trains students to safely guide others on a tree climbing experience. |
